Spinal decompression is a safe, non-surgical treatment option for sciatica. Sciatica is a collection of symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve is injured, irritated, or compressed. The most common symptoms of sciatica are back pain, numbness or tingling in the leg or foot, muscle weakness in the leg or foot, and a sharp burning pain that radiates from the lower back down one leg. At Venice Spine & Disc, our chiropractor, Dr. Michael Grocholski, specializes in sciatica and back pain treatment with spinal decompression in Venice, FL. Take a look at what to expect when you visit us for spinal decompression.

What Is Spinal Decompression Treatment?

Spinal decompression is a safe, effective treatment option for sciatica. At our office, we offer non-surgical spinal decompression, which utilizes a motorized traction table to gently decompress or stretch the spine, limbs, and joints. This treatment option is an alternative to prescription medications or surgery to treat sciatica and back pain.

What Happens During Spinal Decompression?

During spinal decompression therapy, we will have you lie down on a comfortable, padded traction table. You will remain fully clothed. You will bend your knees slightly so they rest on a padded block on the table. We will attach you to a harness to keep you stable as the table moves. Dr. Grocholski will control the movement of the table using a computer program. As the table tilts and turns, it will slowly and gently stretch your spine so that your spine shifts back into alignment and any herniated discs retract.

How Does Spinal Decompression Treat Sciatica?

Because spinal decompression treatments shift your spine back into alignment and help herniated or bulging discs retract back into place, the treatment method relieves pressure on the sciatic nerve. This reduces or eliminates sciatica symptoms. The treatment also creates space for blood, oxygen, and nutrients to flow freely through the spine so it can heal.

Who Should Consider Spinal Decompression?

Damage or irritation to the sciatic nerve is painful and sciatica symptoms can affect every aspect of your life. Spinal decompression can relieve pain and inflammation, restore mobility and range of motion, and help you get back to your normal life. We recommend spinal decompression for people who have been diagnosed with:

  • Sciatica
  • Back pain
  • Age-related disc degeneration
  • Bulging discs or herniated discs
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Bone spurs.

Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

No, spinal decompression is not painful. Most people find the treatment soothing and relaxing.
